How to interface ModalVIEW with cRIO platform

1.Obtain cRIO data acquisition module compiled according to the chassis type and the version of RT system you are using. The cRIO data acquisition module contains the files as following:

Note: The default cRIO data acquisition module shipped with ModalVIEW Installer is compiled for NI 9104 chassis with NI 9234. The RT version is LabVIEW 8.5.1.

2. Install LabVIEW Real-time software, NI-RIO to RT controller using NI Measurement & Automation Explorer, and make RT controller works properly.

3. Deploy cRIO data acquisition module to cRIO RT controller.

Method 1: Using ModalVIEW to automatically deploy cRIO data acquisition module

  • Copy cRIO data acquisition module (three files) to ModalVIEW installation directory, Program files\ABSignal\ModalVIEW 2009\crio\

Note: If your chassis type is NI 9104, please omit above step. Or please replace them with the newly compiled one for your cRIO platform.

  • Run ModalVIEW software and open measurement window. ModalVIEW will automatically search RT controller. The available RT controllers are listed in Front End Control on the toolbar of measurement window.

  • Select RT controller from the Front End list.

  • Execute menu item Operate | Deploy cRIO module. ModalVIEW will automatically deploy cRIO data acquisition module into selected RT controller.

  • Please wait until RT controller is rebooted and LED 4 on RT controller flickers as following mode:

  • Now, the cRIO system is ready for data measurement.

Method 2: Manually deploy cRIO data acquisition module. (When ModalVIEW automatically deployment fails for some reason, you can use this method)

  • Login in RT controller using FTP tool with anonymous account.

  • Upload cRIO data acquisition module (three files) to c:/ni-rt/startup directory in RT controller.

  • Download ni-rt.ini file and change two settings in ni-rt.ini file as following

    [LVRT]
    RTTarget.ApplicationPath= c/ni-rt/startup/crio_rt_daemon.rtexe
    RTTarget.LaunchAppAtBoot=True

  • Replace old ni-rt.ini file with the revised new one.

  • Reboot RT controller and wait LED 4 on RT controller flickers as following mode:

  • Now, the cRIO system is ready for data measurement.

4. Configure channels for cRIO data acquisition.

  • In measurement window, execute the menu item Operate | DAQ Setup…. By default, the total 32 channels (8 NI 9234 modules in different slots) are enabled and listed in DAQ setup window.

Note: Slot 1 on the chassis must not be empty. ModalVIEW don’t check if each slot has NI 9234 modules please make sure the corresponding channels are disabled if there is no module installed.

After configuring measurement channels and other parameters such as sampling rate and trigger, it is ready to start data measurement. When RT controller is in data acquiring status, LED 4 on RT controller flickers as following mode:

You can check the status to make sure if data acquisition works properly. Please refer to ModalVIEW Operating Tutorial Manual for more information about data measurement.
